This is a slippery one, and no mistake. I’ve been listening to it for about three-quarters of an hour now, and I every time I get to the delicious outro the rest of the song just melts away again and I have to go back to the start. But I’m completely OK with that, because it’s a dream of a track.

I loved Friendly Fires when they were jumping into the pool, and telling us they were going to live in Paris one day, and I loved them when they got their 80s rave on. Now I get to love them all over again. This time they are working with The Asphodells (Andrew Weatherall and Timothy J Fairplay), a collaboration designed -

  • to produce music that came from a place outside of their respective usual musical styles - a loose, open-ended process embarked upon for the pure joy of experimentation and collaboration rather than a specific end goal.

Before Your Eyes is certainly loose and open-ended; it’s a drifting, hypnotic, eight minute cruise along an electronic psychedelic dream-pop shoegazey highway. I could listen to it all day (if I’m not careful).

Another track, Velo, joins Before Your Eyes on a double A-side, which will be released on Friendly Fires’ Telophase label on March 31.
