Great Things was the highest charting single for Echobelly, reaching number 13 in September 1995. These were heady times for the band as two further singles from On, King of the Kerb and Dark Therapy, reached 25 and 20 respectively. By this time the album had gone top five, peaking at number four.

For all the comparisons with The Smiths, and the focus on lead singer Sonya Madan, what makes Great Things is nothing more complicated than the atypical optimism in the chorus lyric:

I want to do great things
I don't want to compromise
I want to know what life is
I want to try everything

Sometimes a little positivity is all you need out on the floor.
