Supergrass were a sort of palatable Dickensian-urchin proto-Libertines crossed with a downsized Madness: not so much with the hard drugs; still keen on the jolly japes. It’s possible to remember that one time you saw them play live they opened with Za from Life on Other Planets, and ever since you’ve found it hard to think of a better way to kick off a set. You can remember this even though you have absolutely no memory of anything whatsoever from the support band. (See Up The Bracket, from yesterday).

Here are the Oxford scamps back in their very early, very cheeky younger days, with Mansize Rooster, the second single from their debut album I Should Coco. Try not to think about Madness during the drum intro.

It’s a song about a penis, or so I’m told.
