By my count Black River is the third offshoot from Doves, after Rebelski and Jimi Goodwin’s solo releases in 2014. With Goodwin off doing his thing, brothers Jez and Andy Williams have not been sitting back and resting on Doves’ considerable laurels, instead forming Black Rivers together.

The new project was announced in July, with a first single, The Ship, made available as a free download. The track, synthy essence-of-Doves, retaining elements of the driving melodies at the heart of Doves but at the same time striking out into an unknown world of its own, now has a video to match: black and white town title-appropriate footage of ships gives way to multiple exposures, colour casts, satellites and dishes, kaleidoscopes and the cosmos passing through a future-past and out into shipbuilding in ever more dizzying combinations and damaged film, in keeping with the song’s ever-increasing impetus.
