Exitmusic - The Cold
If I had a section called “accidental discovery of the day” then I could now add The Cold by Exitmusic to the file. Recording on Secretly Canadian, Exitmusic are husband and wife duo Aleksa Palladino and Devon Church; they met in New York, moved to LA, got married overlooking Mulholland Drive, before returning to New York when Palladino was cast in HBO’s Boardwalk Empire (she plays artist Angela Darmody).
Together they fuse their electronic and analog talents to almost improbably cinematic effect, as on The Cold, with its constant hum gradually being swept up by Palladino’s force of nature vocal; a song in search of a dramatic scene. “We want our music to confront people in a gentle but powerful way, to make them feel something”, says Church. Gentle but powerful: a perfect description of The Cold.
